Baseball Game Preview: Calhoun Sandcrabs vs. Jones Trojans

Calhoun is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Friday. They will venture away from home to face off against the Jones Trojans at 7:00 p.m. Jones took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Calhoun, who comes in off a win.

Last Saturday, Calhoun made easy work of Santa Gertrudis Academy and carried off a 7-1 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Sandcrabs.

Dane Spencer tossed a big game, tossing 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits.

On the hitting side, Tucker Amerson was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Parker, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.

Calhoun hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Santa Gertrudis Academy struck out seven times.

Meanwhile, Jones came up short against Sinton on Tuesday, falling 9-3.

Jones saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was BJ Rivas, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.

Calhoun pushed their record up to 8-9-1 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Jones, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-10-1 record this season.

Calhoun came out on top in a nail-biter against Jones in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 1-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Calhoun since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
