Cougars remain No. 1 despite state title game defeat.

The high school football season in North Carolina came to a close over the weekend. Chambers (Charlotte) was among those playing for state championships with a 14-2 loss against Cardinal Gibbons in the NCHSAA Class 4A state title game.

The Cougars overall body of work propelled them to the No. 1 ranking in the final North Carolina MaxPreps Top 25.

Chambers advanced to their fourth consecutive state championship game and appeared in their eighth regional final since 2010. They were the two-time defending state champions.

Junior quarterback Anshon Camp established himself as one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the state, including sparking a 28-0 run in the Cougars state semifinal victory over Hough (Cornelius).

Four-star Tennessee signee James Pearce anchored a Chambers defense that allowed 14.5 points per contest.
