5A West recap Oct. 9, 2012
Greenbrier scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Morrilton, 49-13. At the time, the Devil Dogs was ranked 19th in the state, while the Panthers was 29th.
Greenbrier was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Morrilton. Randy Tribble's team came in at 17 in the state poll after placing at number 29 last week.
Seth Peters threw for 305 yards and five touchdowns. He went 26-36 with zero interceptions.
Chandler Smith was the most productive running back in 5A West this week. He ran for 78 yards on 18 carries as Shiloh Christian lost to Vilonia. Casey Paraday also contributed to the rushing game with 55 yards on the ground.
Jesse May made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Panthers defeated Cody McNabb's team. The 5-foot-9 senior pulled down two interceptions.
Smith was the best wideout in the league this week as the Panthers lost to the Eagles. Smith tallied 12 receptions for 137 yards. Ronnie Green helped Clarksville's passing attack out by catching five balls for 58 yards.
Thanks to the talents of Peters and Austin Fischer Greenbrier has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Peters leads the league in passing with 1534 yards, while Fischer has rushed for 380 yards this season. The Saints' Ryan Michaelis leads the league in receiving yards with 718 on 39 catches.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Vilonia takes on the Devil Dogs. As it stands, Jim Stanley's team is in second, while Morrilton is in fourth.
The Eagles extended the longest winning streak in 5A West this week by beating Clarksville, 45-13. The victory was the fourth in a row for Vilonia.
