Softball Game Preview: South San Antonio Bobcats vs. Jay Mustangs

The South San Antonio Bobcats will challenge the Jay Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. South San Antonio is coming into the contest hot, having won their last eight games.

South San Antonio is headed into the match having just posted their closest victory since April 26, 2024 on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Southwest 6-5.

Catalina Bonilla spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sophia Balzadua, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. Those two hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Christina Guerra, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Jay, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Tuesday. They skirted past Southside 2-1.

South San Antonio's win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-6. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Jay, their win bumped their record up to 5-11.

South San Antonio took their victory against Jay in their previous matchup back in March by a conclusive 16-0 score. Will the Bobcats repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
