Baseball Game Preview: SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars vs. Midway Raiders

The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars will face off against the Midway Raiders on Friday. The last six games SouthWest Edgecombe has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

SouthWest Edgecombe is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They won by a run and slipped past Seaforth 4-3. That's two games straight that the Cougars have won by just one run.

Parker Gay made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one triple. That triple was his first of the season.

Gay wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Derrick Davis, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. That's the most RBI Davis has posted since back in May of 2024.

Meanwhile, Midway waltzed into their match on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They never let the Mariners get on the board and left with a 4-0 win.

East Carteret's batters probably weren't too happy with Tanner Williams, who pitched a no hitter and racked up eight Ks (he gave up zero walks).

Midway's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 21-7. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for SouthWest Edgecombe, their victory bumped their record up to 17-7.

SouthWest Edgecombe suffered a grim 7-1 defeat to Midway when the teams last played back in May of 2019. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
