3A District 5 recap September 17, 2013
Fans got a thrill when Nick Young and Nick Lockett connected against West Jessamine. The longest such play in 3A District 5 this season, the connection resulted in 88 yards.
Powell County moved up to 101 from 135 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Pirates were able to make move up by defeating Prestonsburg 28-27.
Lockett was the best running back in the league this week. In 15 carries, he ran for 116 yards as Western Hills lost to the Colts. Teammate Daniel Childress added to the ground attack by rushing for 24 yards.
Lockett was the best wideout in 3A District 5 this week as the Wolverines fell to West Jessamine. Lockett racked up 2 receptions for 109 yards. Cody Williams helped Western Hills' passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 15 yards.
Trevor Jones put up the best numbers through the air as Estill County fell to Magoffin County. He finished with 11 completions for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Bourbon County's Dalton Pope and Snoop Johnson have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Pope has thrown for 794 yards this season, while Johnson has 9 catches for 243 yards. Jones from the Engineers leads the league in rushing with 362 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Estill County takes on Bath County. Mike Jones' team is currently in fifth, while the Wildcats are in sixth.
The Engineers fell to the Hornets 44-21 last week, the largest margin of any game. Jones ran for 69 yards in the defeat.
