Amarillo has gone a perfect 5-0 against Lubbock recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Sandies will host the Westerners at 7:00 p.m. Lubbock took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Amarillo, who comes in off a win.
Amarillo is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They took their game on Thursday with ease, bagging a 79-6 win over Coronado. With the Sandies ahead 52-0 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Jude Dunavin produced another solid effort rushing for 226 yards and four touchdowns on only eight carries, while also picking up 117 receiving yards and a pair of scores. His longest rush was for an incredible 85 yards. Another player making a difference was Jett Lopez, who threw for 225 yards and three TDs on only 18 passes.
Amarillo didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Coronado to a completion percentage of just 37.5%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from two players: Kam'Ron Randle and A.J. Randle, who each logged one passes deflected. Amarillo wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 57.1%.
Amarillo didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Randle and Duece Patterson. Amarillo received some extra help from Kason Stroud, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Meanwhile, Lubbock was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They lost 29-8 to Caprock. The matchup was a close 7-6 at the break, but unfortunately for the Westerners it sure didn't stay that way.
Amarillo will have to contain Anthony Boyd as he made an impact in Lubbock's last game. He rushed for 74 yards and one score on only five carries.
The victory made it two in a row for Amarillo and bumps their season record up to 6-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 16 points in those games. As for Lubbock, their loss dropped their record down to 1-7.
Friday's game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Dunavin and Bo Davis. Dunavin just won't slow down this season and has run in 12 touchdowns while averaging 144.5 rushing yards per game. Davis has been a dominant force too and has run in 9 touchdowns while averaging 169 rushing yards per game.
Everything came up roses for Amarillo against Lubbock in their previous matchup back in November of 2024, as the squad secured a 47-7 victory. Will the Sandies repeat their success, or do the Westerners have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
