Football Recap: Hanks Drops Highest Score of Season Against Burges

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Hanks). They enjoyed a cozy 35-21 win over the Burges Mustangs on Friday. The Knights have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Mustangs, too.

It was another big night for Austin Deucher, who rushed for 202 yards and two TDs while picking up 7.2 yards per carry, and also picked up 36 receiving yards and one touchdown. Jordan Morales was another key player, throwing for 303 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Hanks didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Burges to a completion percentage of just 25%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from four players: Brandon Sanchez, Johnny Swartz, Demarco Unger, and Junior Gardea, who each logged one passes deflected. Hanks wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 62.5%.

Despite the loss, Burges still got an impressive performance from Nezahul Cisneros, who rushed for 179 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 9.0 yards per carry. Cisneros' rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 140 rushing yards.

Hanks' victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 3-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 11.3 points on average over those games. As for Burges, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-3 record this season.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Hanks will challenge rival Del Valle at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 1,002 yards in their previous games. Meanwhile, Burges is set to face off against their familiar foe Horizon at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
