Recap: Shelter Island Islanders vs. Smithtown Christian Knights
The Shelter Island Islanders's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their 18th straight loss dating back to last season. They might have been a little too into the holiday spirit, gifting Smithtown Christian an easy 88-66 win. Shelter Island has struggled against Smithtown Christian recently, as their contest on Thursday was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.
Evan Weslek and Harrison Weslek certainly did their best on Thursday to try and avoid the loss. Weslek scored 36 points, while Weslek scored 26 points. Weslek scored a full 39.4% of Shelter Island's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Smithtown Christian got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Nehemiah Yuen out in front who scored 30 points. The match was Yuen's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Isaiah McCarter was another key contributor, scoring 25 points.
Shelter Island bumped their record down to 0-3 with that loss, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season. As for Smithtown Christian, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Shelter Island will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Greenport at 6:15 p.m. on January 3, 2024. Smithtown Christian will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against Port Jefferson at 12:00 p.m. on December 30th.
