Green-Beckham, Standard finish record-breaking seasons in Missouri

Two of Missouri's top football athletes wrapped up the 2010 season with playoff losses over the weekend.

Hillcrest's (Springfield) aerial game produced plenty of yards Monday against tenth-ranked Union. But the Wildcat secondary ripped scoring opportunities away from the Dorial Green-Beckham-led offense and produced a 35-7 triumph over Hillcrest in the Class 4 sectional contest.

Union defensive backs intercepted four Matt Futrell passes, including two picks in the early stages of the fourth quarter.

"Our kids played hard," Hillcrest coach John Beckham told the Springfield News-Leader. "We had our opportunities, but we just couldn't make it happen. Penalties kind of hurt us, and turnovers obviously hurt us toward the end.

"To beat the teams as you go up that ladder, we can't make mistakes like we did tonight and expect to win," Beckham added.

Except for the interceptions, Futrell did have some success throwing the ball, completing 22 of 48 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown. Jermey Coleman was on the other end of nine of those tosses for 195 yards and the score.

Union quarterback Chris Savage, who completed 14 of 22 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown, put the game's first points on the board when he crossed the goal line from 42 yards out.

Following a 51-yard scoring strike from Futrell to Coleman, Savage dented the goal line from a yard out in the second quarter to allow the Wildcats to head to the locker room entertaining a 14-7 advantage.

Three different Wildcats produced fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away after neither team could score in the third quarter. Savage scored the second half's first touchdown on a seven-yard scamper and then connected with Bryan Schaefer from 57 yards out. Ryan Baser produced the game's final points with a 17-yard run.

Despite the loss, Green-Beckham upgraded a pair of receiving records that he broke last week in a first round 49-28 win over St. Clair. The 6-foot-6, 218-pound junior improved his Missouri single season record for receiving yards to 1,706 on 78 receptions, breaking the old mark of 1,622 yards he established a year ago.

The 2009-10 MaxPreps Male Athlete of the Year scored 15 touchdowns receiving this season.

Green-Beckham also reestablished the Show-Me State's career receiving mark last week as just a junior. After tacking on this week's performance, the Class 4 all-state receiver heads into his senior season with 4,160 yards to his name and 51 career touchdown receptions.

STANDARD ENDS PREP CAREER WITH ST. LOUIS MARK
Hazelwood East's (St. Louis) 60-49 sectional win over Chaminade (8-3) Monday may have ended Rob Standard's prep football career. But the Spartans couldn't char the legacy of the Iowa State recruit.

Standard broke former Timberland running back Montee Ball's St. Louis area career rushing record of 7,109 yards earlier this season in an Oct. 22 win over Parkway North. The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder took advantage of three additional games to add to his mark.

At the conclusion of Monday's loss, Standard ended his career with 7,799 yards and 98 touchdowns after he rushed for 223 yards and three scores on 36 carries. Standard finished his career by scoring at least one touchdown in 35 straight football games. For the year, Standard ran the ball 297 times for 2,355 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Standard wasn't the only running back that made a statement Monday. Trey Perry of Hazelwood East (St. Louis) torched the Red Devil defense for 278 yards rushing and four touchdowns on just 15 carries in the high scoring affair.

Perry saved the day late in the game when he recovered an onside kick following Chaminade quarterback Christian Suntrup's 1-yard scoring plunge with 2:20 left in the game. The recovery resulted in great field position and eventually a 1-yard scoring run by Trey Hill that secured the win.

"I'm very proud of the guys," Hazelwood East football coach Brian Simmons told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We've come a long way. Our kids just finally started to believe in our offense."

Suntrup completed 14 of 29 passes for 218 yards and four scores Monday, including eight completions to Giovanni Ferrara for 169 yards and three touchdowns. Spartan signal caller Hill completed 6 of 13 passes for 212 yards and three scores. Jalyn Fulton caught four passes for 122 yards and a score.

TEAMS AT TOP STILL ALIVE
Through two rounds of elimination only defending Class 2 champion Maryville has been eliminated from the Missouri State Football Playoffs. The Class 3 eighth-ranked Spoofhounds were upended by No. 3 Richmond 21-14 Monday. Otherwise, all other defending state champions remain in the hunt.
