Baseball Recap: Southmont Has No Trouble Against Attica

Southmont came out on top against Attica on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run second inning. The Mounties put the hurt on the Red Ramblers with a sharp 10-0 win. The victory continues a trend for the Mounties in their matchups with the Red Ramblers: they've now won five in a row.

Dean McGaughey was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. Southmont is 2-1 when McGaughey posts three or more hits, but 3-16 otherwise.

McGaughey wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Phisher Benge, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. Benge has become a key player for Southmont: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 2-17 otherwise.

Southmont always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Attica only posted an OBP of .240.

Southmont's win bumped their record up to 5-17. As for Attica, their defeat was their seventh straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-18-1.

Southmont wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 9-8 victory against South Putnam on the 28th. As for Attica, they have also already played their next contest, a 10-1 loss against Benton Central on the 27th.
