Softball Recap: Mathews' Winning Streak Snapped at Five Games

Mathews dropped their record down to 12-3 on Thursday, which also ended the team's five-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Elyria Catholic Panthers, falling 12-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Mustangs have suffered since May 10, 2024.

As for Elyria Catholic, the win keeps they at an undefeated 14-0. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average this season.

For Elyria Catholic's part, Harper Morgan was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off eight hits (and not a single walk). Morgan has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off two home runs and four RBI while going 2-for-4. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jessica Conner, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, five RBI, and two runs. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Hannah Brooks was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Coincidentally, Mathews and Elyria Catholic will both be playing Maumee the next time they take the field. The Panthers will host the Panthers at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, while the Mustangs will play them later in the day, at 4:00 p.m.
