Baseball Recap: Greencastle Starts Season with Victory Against South Vermillion

Greencastle took care of business in their home opener (barely) on Wednesday. They skirted past the South Vermillion Wildcats 7-6. The Tiger Cubs haven't had any issues with the Wildcats recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Sam Gooch was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in May of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one triple, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Connor Sullivan was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. Those two hits gave him a new career-high.

Greencastle kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in eight consecutive games dating back to last season.

South Vermillion's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Looking ahead, Greencastle will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Western Boone at 6:00 p.m. As for South Vermillion, they are taking a road trip to challenge Parke Heritage at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
