Baseball Game Preview: Mt. Carmel Golden Aces vs. Newton Eagles

The Mt. Carmel Golden Aces will head out to take on the Newton Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Mt. Carmel is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.

Mt. Carmel's last matchup with North Clay/Clay City could've gone either way, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the pair's contest on Tuesday. The Golden Aces lost 11-1 to North Clay/Clay City. The Golden Aces haven't had much luck with North Clay/Clay City recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.

Santiago Guanipa was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-2.

Meanwhile, Newton entered their tilt with Dieterich on Tuesday with three consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with four. They walked away with an 8-4 victory over the Movin Maroons. The game was the first time the Eagles have beaten the Movin Maroons on their field since April 11, 2017.

The team relied heavily on Quincy Fulton, who scored three runs and stole three bases while going 3-for-3. He is becoming a predictor of Newton's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 6-8 when he doesn't).

Newton pushed their record up to 8-9 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Mt. Carmel, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-3.

Newton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mt. Carmel hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .373. It's a different story for Newton, though, as they've only averaged .249. Will they be able to contain Mt. Carmel's hitters?

Mt. Carmel was able to grind out a solid win over Newton in their previous meeting back in March, winning 8-5. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Golden Aces since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
