Basketball Recap: Niobrara/Verdigre Snags Ninth Victory in Last 11 Games

After losing to Santee the last time they met, Niobrara/Verdigre decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Niobrara/Verdigre Cougars strolled past the Santee Warriors with points to spare on Saturday, taking the game 65-48. The win was familiar territory for the Cougars who have now won three matchups in a row.

Leading Niobrara/Verdigre to victory were Delani Runnels and Taylen Stark. Runnels went 10 for 21 on her way to 29 points along with seven rebounds and four steals, while Stark posted 21 points in addition to seven steals and five assists. Stark is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Eve Kucera, who scored 12 points and seven boards.

Niobrara/Verdigre smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Santee only pulled down eight offensive boards.

Santee lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Miley Pike, who had 17 points and seven rebounds. That was a full 35.4% of Santee's points, marking the seventh time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. Shelby Johnson was another key player, putting up eight points along with eight boards and six blocks.

Niobrara/Verdigre has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. As for Santee, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-5.

Niobrara/Verdigre didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 52-49 loss against St. Mary's on the 4th. As for Santee, they will be taking part in a tournament against Chambers/Wheeler Central at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Santee is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.1 points per game this season.
