Baseball Recap: Hammond Central Extends Winning Streak to Four

Hammond Central waltzed into their game on Tuesday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They put the hurt on the Marquette Catholic Blazers with a sharp 17-10 victory. While the Wolves didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Dashaun Turner was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. Turner was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Hammond Central is undefeated when Turner posts two or more runs, but 2-3-1 otherwise.

In other batting news, Ruben Esquivel was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Juan Magallanes was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Hammond Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Hammond Central pushed their record up to 6-3-1 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 22.5 runs over those games. As for Marquette Catholic, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.

Coming up, Hammond Central will head out to take on Highland at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Trojans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.2 runs per game on average), something the Wolves will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Marquette Catholic, they will face off against La Lumiere at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
