Basketball Recap: Mercedes Tigers vs. Harlingen South Hawks
Mercedes lost against Harlingen South back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Mercedes Tigers lost 36-16 to the Harlingen South Hawks. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1116th, while the Hawks are ranked 339th).
Harlingen South was led to victory by Serena Cano and Kayden Villarreal. Cano posted nine points along with five rebounds and five steals, while Villarreal had 11 points and seven steals. Cano is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played. Allison Miller was another key player, putting up seven points and five boards.
Mercedes has traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last ten matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 13-17 record this season. As for Harlingen South, the win (which was their 14th in a row) raised their record to 23-5.
