Ella VanAlstyne was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 17 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 16 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Paige Chiaramonte, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one triple. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Caitlyn Braun, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
Woodland Regional kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in 24 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Meanwhile, St. Paul Catholic faced Seymour in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Falcons walked away with a 6-1 victory over the Wildcats.
Lauren Kozlak spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits.
On the hitting side, Laila McCulloch was excellent, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Isabella McCulloch, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
St. Paul Catholic has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 13 of their last 14 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-2 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games. As for Woodland Regional, their victory bumped their record up to 22-0.
Friday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Woodland Regional has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .534. However, it's not like St. Paul Catholic struggles in that department as they've averaged .513. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
