League recap: Nacogdoches win leads to rise in state rank

Nacogdoches moved up to 476 from 525 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 4A Region II District 16. The Dragons were able to make the jump by beating the Dragons 44-21.

Whitehouse extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Marshall, 60-14. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Wildcats.

Patrick Mahomes and Tre'vyieon Staples gave Whitehouse a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Mahomes threw for 177 yards and five touchdowns, while Staples ran for 66 yards. Teammate Ryan Cheatham added to the ground attack by rushing for 55 yards.

Fred Ross was the best wideout in the league this week as Tyler topped Horn. Ross racked up six receptions for 90 yards. Darion Flowers helped Tyler's passing attack out by catching nine balls for 86 yards.

Greg Ward provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Lions beat the Jaguars. He completed 16 passes for 219 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for 20 yards.

Randy Mcfarlin's team's Mahomes and Dylan Cantrell have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 4A Region II District 16 in both passing and receiving yards. Mahomes has thrown for 1101 yards this season, while Cantrell, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 22 catches for 458 yards. Devontay Bell from Corsicana leads the league in rushing with 354 yards.

The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Whitehouse takes on second place Tyler. Last week, the Wildcats bested the Mavericks, while Tyler beat Horn.

Ricklan Holmes's team suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after a 35-30 loss to Ricklan Holmes's team. The Lions had been ranked 24th, but fell to 34 following the defeat.
