Baseball Recap: Ash Fork/Seligman Comes Up Short

St. Michael hit Ash Fork/Seligman with a four-run fifth inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Spartans fell just short of the Cardinals by a score of 7-6. The Spartans were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Cardinals earlier this season, when they won 20-2.

Nico Kennedy was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. He is becoming a predictor of Ash Fork/Seligman's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 3-1 (and 3-10 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Jesus Ayala made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was D. J. Godinez, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Ash Fork/Seligman has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season. As for St. Michael, their win ended an eight-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-12.
