The Clopton Hawks are taking a road trip to square off against the Winfield Warriors at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. Winfield took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Clopton, who comes in off a win.
Clopton's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 15-0 margin over Wellsville-Middletown. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Hawks.
Peter Daskalakis was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Daskalakis was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on John Grillo, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Tucker Salmons was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base.
Meanwhile, Winfield scored the most runs they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They fell just short of St. Louis HomeSchool P by a score of 16-15. The Warriors have struggled against the Patriots recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.
DJ Barth was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and two RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Brennan Howard, who scored two runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
Even though they lost, Winfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Winfield's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Clopton, their record now sits at 2-0.
Clopton suffered a grim 16-4 defeat to Winfield in their previous matchup back in March of 2019. Can Clopton avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
