Softball Game Preview: Auburn Trojans vs. South Whidbey Falcons

Auburn is on a five-game streak of home losses, and South Whidbey a four-game streak of away losses. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Saturday. The Auburn Trojans will look to defend their home field against the South Whidbey Falcons at 1:00 p.m.

Auburn fell victim to Mt. Rainier and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They came up short against the Rams, falling 10-0.

Meanwhile, South Whidbey hadn't done well against Granite Falls recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Falcons came out on top in a nail-biter against the Tigers, sneaking past 7-5. The victory was some much needed relief for the Falcons as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Sophia Jennings spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Sophie Ziegler, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Gretta Jones, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs.

South Whidbey's win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 5-5. As for Auburn, their loss dropped their record down to 1-11.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Auburn has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Whidbey struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
