Basketball Game Preview: Portage Northern Huskies vs. Mattawan Wildcats

Portage Northern is 1-9 against Mattawan since February of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Portage Northern Huskies will look to defend their home court against the Mattawan Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Portage Northern is headed into Thursday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fourth straight game on Tuesday. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 53-51 heartbreaker at the hands of Paw Paw. While losing is never fun, the Huskies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 206th, while the Red Wolves are ranked 63rd).

Meanwhile, Mattawan played a tough match on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were outmatched by Okemos and fell 62-35. The Wildcats were down 48-26 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.

Portage Northern's defeat dropped their record down to 11-10. As for Mattawan, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost 12 of their last 15 contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 5-16 record this season.

Portage Northern beat Mattawan 54-45 in their previous meeting back in January. Will Portage Northern repeat their success, or does Mattawan have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
