Hillcrest is coming home in high spirits after they had to open their season on the road against Corona. Hillcrest breezed by Corona on the road to the tune of 47-14 on Friday. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 34-0.
A big part of the win came down to the chemistry between Matthew Ramos and his top target Nicholas Shaw. Ramos threw for 233 yards and five touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes while Shaw picked up 126 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Julian Sandoval, who picked up 85 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Hillcrest was moving up and down the field and finished the game with 404 total yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Corona only gained 215.
Meanwhile, Santiago couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They were outmatched by Yucaipa at home and fell 40-13. While losing is never fun, the Sharks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 340th, while the Thunderbirds are ranked 167th).
Even if they lost, Santiago's defensive line still kept up the pressure with five sacks. In that department, Daniel Perez was the leader with two.
