Volleyball Recap: Merino Takes Down Ranked Fleming

Merino faced Fleming in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Rams were the clear victors by a 3-0 margin over the Wildcats. The win continues a trend for the Rams in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won six in a row.

Merino walked away with the victory (and looked especially good in the first set). Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-15, 25-22, 25-23.

Jadelynn Powell paced Merino's offense, picking up 22 kills. Powell got some help from Riley Pope and her 32 assists. Finally, Powell was also a dominant defender, finishing with a team-high three blocks.

Fleming lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Brooke Schaefer, who had 27 digs and two assists. She is on a roll when it comes to digs, as she's now had 11 or more in each of the last six games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Hayley Chamberlain, who had 18 digs and 17 assists.

Merino's win bumped their record up to 19-2. As for Fleming, their loss dropped their record down to 19-3.

Merino didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 3-0 victory against Prairie on the 30th. As for Fleming, they will be playing at home against Caliche at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
