Football Recap: Ivan Esparza Key Part of Team Effort in Wolverines Win + How To Watch

Truckee won the last time they faced Elko and things went their way on Friday too. The Wolverines managed a 20-14 win over the Indians. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Wolverines' disadvantage in MaxPreps' football rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 145th in California, while the Indians are ranked tenth in Nevada).

Truckee's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ivan Esparza, who rushed for 137 yards and one score. The Wolverines are undefeated when Esparza posts 80 or more rushing yards, but 1-2 otherwise. Rylan Lauter was another key rusher, rushing for 109 yards and one TD on only six carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Truckee was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 374 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 301 rushing yards in four consecutive games.

Although Elko took the loss, they still got scores from Riott Duke and Armando Acosta.

Truckee has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 28.3 points over those games. Having lost for the first time this season, Elko fell to 5-1.

That contest will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Esparza and Erick Valencia. Meanwhile, Elko is set to face off against their familiar foe Sparks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
