Basketball Recap: St. Marys Triumphs

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but St. Marys had no problem doing just that on Thursday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Riverside [Wathena/Elwood] Cyclones, sneaking past 43-40. Given the Bears' advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 70th, while the Cyclones are ranked 239th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

St. Marys had a senior duo take command as Hayden Heim dropped a double-double with 23 points and 15 boards and Isabel Hurla went 5-for-12 to rack up 18 points and six rebounds. Heim is crushing it when it comes to boards: she's pulled down at least eight every time she's taken the court this season.

Riverside [Wathena/Elwood]'s loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kennedy Griffin, who posted 13 points. Ella Wisler was another key player, putting up 12 points.

The win made it two in a row for St. Marys and bumps their season record up to 12-9. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.0 points over those games. As for Riverside [Wathena/Elwood], they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-11.

As of now, neither St. Marys nor Riverside [Wathena/Elwood] have any future games scheduled.
