Basketball Recap: Makayla Calzada Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Florida College Academy

It was a Battle of the Birds when Families Instructing Students HomeSchool duked it out with Florida College Academy on Monday. The Families Instructing Students HomeSchool Hawks came out on top against the Florida College Academy Falcons by a score of 41-34. The victory continues a trend for the Hawks in their matchups with the Falcons: they've now won four in a row.

Families Instructing Students HomeSchool's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Makayla Calzada led the charge by going 6 of 14 on her way to 13 points along with seven boards and three steals. That's the most points Calzada has posted since back in November of 2023. Another player making a difference was Julianna Lamon, who went 5 for 8 to rack up 13 points and seven rebounds.

Families Instructing Students HomeSchool pushed their record up to 11-9 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 15.7 points over those games. As for Florida College Academy, their loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 7-4.

Families Instructing Students HomeSchool didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 52-40 victory against Winter Haven Christian on the 11th. As for Florida College Academy, they will face off against Candlelight Christian Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Florida College Academy is facing Candlelight Christian Academy at the right time seeing as Candlelight Christian Academy is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
