Basketball Recap: Grimsley Takes a Tough Playoff Loss

Grimsley and Marvin Ridge squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Grimsley had to settle for second. They fell 59-50 to the Marvin Ridge Mavericks. While losing is never fun, the Whirlies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 70th, while the Mavericks are ranked 17th).

Despite the defeat, Grimsley had strong showings from Shyla Simms, who shot 50% from the field on her way to 23 points in addition to eight boards and six assists, and Alyssa Graves, who dropped a double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds. Simms is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last 11 games she's played.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Grimsley was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. This was only their second loss (out of 15 games) when they've passed the ball that well.

Grimsley dropped their record down to 17-8 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road. As for Marvin Ridge, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 16 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-5 record this season.

Grimsley does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Marvin Ridge, they will take on Hickory Ridge at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Marvin Ridge knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past four matchups -- so hopefully Hickory Ridge likes a good challenge.
