Basketball Recap: Archbishop McCarthy Takes a Loss

Archbishop McCarthy's tournament run continued when they took on Northwestern on Saturday. The Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks were beaten by the Northwestern Bulls 82-51. While losing is never fun, the Mavericks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 173rd, while the Bulls are ranked 21st).

Northwestern's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Calvin Russell Jr., who went 6 of 11 on his way to 12 points along with six rebounds and five assists. Russell Jr. has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last seven times he's played. Another player making a difference was Zacuras Dawson, who went 8 for 14 en route to 18 points.

Archbishop McCarthy's loss dropped their record down to 12-9. As for Northwestern, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 16-3.

Archbishop McCarthy will challenge Martin County at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Northwestern, they will take on North Tampa Christian Academy at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.
