Canutillo is a perfect 5-0 against Jefferson since October of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Eagles will head out to square off against the Silver Foxes at 7:00 p.m. Jefferson took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Canutillo, who comes in off a win.
Canutillo's defense heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed last Friday. They took their matchup with ease, bagging a 28-0 victory over El Paso. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 397th, while the Tigers are ranked 940th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.
Canutillo relied on the efforts of Cesar Huerta, who rushed for 133 yards and three TDs on only 12 carries, and Jarid Gamiz, who rushed for 204 yards and one score while picking up 12.8 yards per carry. Gamiz's longest rush was for an impressive 69 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Canutillo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 404 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 189 rushing yards in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Jefferson was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were outmatched by El Paso and fell 34-7.
Even if they lost, Jefferson's defensive line still kept up the pressure with four sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Jose Estrada, Alberto Nevarez, and Dilan Bautista, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Canutillo now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Jefferson, their loss dropped their record down to 1-5.
Friday's game might be decided in the trenches. Canutillo has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 256 rushing yards per game. It's a different story for Jefferson, though, as they've been averaging only 89.3 rushing yards. How will they fare against such a dominant running game?
Everything came up roses for Canutillo against Jefferson when the teams last played back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 51-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
