By Zack Poff Oct 31, 2020, 7:00pm

Jake Garcia throws for two touchdowns in Rams debut as No. 5 Grayson improves to 7-0.

The biggest high school football game of the week was a one-sided affair as No. 1 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) improved to 7-0 with a dominant 49-14 win over No. 6 Northwestern (Miami). Michigan-bound quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw for four scores and Kaytron Allen accounted for three touchdowns.

Jake Garcia was granted eligibility earlier this week to play for No. 5 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) and he threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns in the 47-7 win over Parkview (Lilburn, Ga). Clemson-bound running back Phil Mafah continued his strong senior season rushing for 149 yards and two scores on only 12 carries.

A week after beating St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) No. 24 Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) could not capitalize on two redzone opportunities late in the fourth quarter and fell short against American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) 23-17. Expect to see the Patriots jump back in the Top 50 rankings on Monday.

They face No. 29 St. Thomas Aquinas on ESPN2 next Friday. The Raiders bounced back with a 31-7 win over DeLand (Fla.).

All five of the teams from Ohio ranked in the Top 50 advanced to the next round of the playoffs.

The defending Division 1 state champs, No. 16 Pickerington Central (Pickerington), cruised to a 38-7 win against Westerville Central (Westerville) to advance to the semifinals for the fifth consecutive year. They face No. 36 Mentor next after the Cardinals beat Medina 49-14.

No. 37 St. Xavier (Cincinnati) scored the game-winning touchdown in the final minute to hand Lakota West (West Chester) its first loss of the season with a 10-7 victory. Brogan McCaughey connected with 2021 Penn State commit Liam Clifford from 17 yards out with :26 left in the fourth quarter and up next for the Bombers is Springfield on Nov. 6.

No. 21 Archbishop Hoban (Akron) and No. 38 Washington (Massillon) both won in the Division 2 bracket to advance to the quarterfinals.
