Baseball Recap: Platte Valley Triumphs

Platte Valley was not the first on the board on Tuesday, but they got there more often. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Weld Central Rebels. The two-run effort marked the Broncos' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Dagan Gomez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on five hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Nick Silvas, who scored a run and stole three bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Hudson Flummerfelt was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

Platte Valley is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Weld Central, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 6-6.

Coincidentally, Platte Valley and Weld Central will both be playing Strasburg the next time they take the field. The Broncos will host the Indians at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, while the Rebels will head out to face them at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
