Softball Game Preview: Irwin County Indians vs. Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane

The Irwin County Indians will head out on the road to face off against the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Irwin County has 17 straight wins, Fitzgerald has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

On Tuesday, Irwin County got the win against Charlton County by a conclusive 11-1. Irwin County might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 contests by eight runs or more this season.

Brooklyn Gordon was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed six innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sailor Mixon, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Brynlee Brown was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Fitzgerald fell victim to Crisp County and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They lost 10-0 to the Cougars.

Fitzgerald's loss dropped their record down to 3-25. As for Irwin County, their record now sits at 19-2.

Irwin County came out on top in a nail-biter against Fitzgerald when the teams last played back in September of 2024, sneaking past 6-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Indians since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
