The Wakulla War Eagles will head out on the road to challenge the Maclay Marauders at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wakulla is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.3 runs per game this season.
Wakulla hadn't beaten Madison County on the road since March 21, 2022 but that history sure didn't bother them on Tuesday. Wakulla walked away with an 8-5 victory over Madison County. The War Eagles haven't had any issues with the Cowboys recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Gavin Estep was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out eight over seven innings pitched. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in February. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Josiah Pierini, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs. James Hoffman was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
Leon typically has all the answers at home, but on Saturday Maclay proved too difficult a challenge. They never let the Lions get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory. The Marauders not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since February 11th.
Tucker Poppell was excellent, scoring three runs while going 2-for-2. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024. Nicky Fiore also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Maclay always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .516. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Leon only posted an OBP of .296.
The win made it two in a row for Maclay and bumps their season record up to 9-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Wakulla, their record now sits at 9-5.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Wakulla has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .462. However, it's not like Maclay struggles in that department as they've averaged .445. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wakulla might still be hurting after the 13-7 loss they got from Maclay in their previous matchup back in February. Can Wakulla avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
