Football Recap: Mattoon Greenwave vs. Salem Wildcats
After soaring to 42 points the game before, Mattoon was a bit more limited in their match on Friday. They fell 23-13 to the Salem Wildcats. The Greenwave were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in September of 2016.
Mattoon's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Brayden Dailey, who rushed for 92 yards and one score, and Brayden Hackett, who threw for 119 yards and one touchdown.
Mattoon didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Jayden Tipton and Shayden Neff. Another thorn in Salem's side was Fletcher Gregory, who made 14 total tackles (1.0 for loss).
Trey Clark had a dynamite game For Salem., rushing for 222 yards and one TD while picking up 7.2 yards per carry. Those 222 rushing yards gave Clark a new career-high.
Mattoon now has a losing record of 1-2. As for Salem, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
Mattoon wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 48-0 defeat against Mt. Zion on the 19th. As for Salem, they have also already played their next game, a 56-0 victory against East Alton-Wood River on the 19th.
