Softball Recap: Granville Central Panthers vs. Southern Durham Spartans

Granville Central was the 17-16 winner over Southern Durham when they last played one another back in March of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Granville Central Panthers suffered a tough 18-9 loss at the hands of the Southern Durham Spartans on Tuesday. Granville Central has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Alanah Applewhite and Christina Cappuccio stepped up to the plate in a big way. Applewhite scored three runs and stole five bases while getting on base in five of her two plate appearances, while Cappuccio scored three runs and stole five bases while going 4-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Mariah Bullock, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with four stolen bases.

Even though they lost, Granville Central always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .821. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Southern Durham only posted an OBP of .510.

On Southern Durham's side, Jasmyn Wilson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off three hits. Wilson has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive pitching appearances. Wilson was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.

In other batting news, Anaiah Bailey was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in three of her six plate appearances. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now stolen at least one in the last four games she's played. Coretta Nickens was another key contributor, scoring two runs while going 3-for-5.

Granville Central's defeat dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Southern Durham, their win bumped their record up to 5-9.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Granville Central will face off against Southern Durham at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Southern Durham, they will head out on the road to square off against East Chapel Hill at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
