Softball Recap: Hamden Comes Up Short

Hamden extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 4-15 in the process. They lost 14-2 to the Shelton Gaels. That's two games in a row now that the Green Dragons have lost by exactly 12 runs.

As for Shelton, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 15-4. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games.

For Shelton's part, Riley Breunig was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. That's the most strikeouts Breunig has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Those hits marked the first that she has got this season.

In other batting news, Shelton got a massive performance out of Chayse DellaRocco, who went 3-for-4 with three doubles, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI DellaRocco has posted since back in April. Tori Silva was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four stolen bases and three runs.

Looking ahead, Hamden will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against New London at 4:45 p.m. As for Shelton, they are taking a road trip to challenge North Haven at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Gaels are facing the Nighthawks at the right time seeing as the Nighthawks are stuck on a three-game losing streak.
