Softball Recap: Naugatuck Wins Going Away Against Wolcott

Naugatuck was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against Wolcott on Thursday. The Greyhounds put the hurt on the Eagles with a sharp 13-1 win. Considering the Greyhounds have won six contests by more than 11 runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Carly Luchina made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed six innings while giving up just one earned run off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 5-for-5 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Those five hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Madeline Cheney and Myla Derosa did most of the damage at the plate: Cheney went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Derosa went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave Derosa a new career-high. Jaylin Meager also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Naugatuck kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 8.8.

Naugatuck has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-10 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Wolcott, their record is now 11-8.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Naugatuck is set to face off against their familiar foe Woodland Regional at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Wolcott will take on rival Crosby at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
