Southern Guilford has gone a perfect 8-0 against Ben L. Smith recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Storm will head out on the road to square off against the Golden Eagles at 6:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
On Friday, Southern Guilford got the win against Atkins by a conclusive 12-2. The victory continues a trend for the Storm in their matchups with the Camels: they've now won eight in a row.
Kenly Brown made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Brown was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, one triple, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kylie Misenhiemer, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Bailey Gray also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Southern Guilford always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .531. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Atkins only posted an OBP of .333.
Meanwhile, Ben L. Smith made easy work of Dudley on Friday and carried off a 20-10 win. That's two games straight that the Golden Eagles have won by exactly ten runs.
Like Southern Guilford, Ben L. Smith also got a great game from a two-way player: Makaylah Taylor-Neal. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up seven earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. With that strong performance, Taylor-Neal is now averaging an impressive 5.4 strikeouts per game. She was even better at the plate, scoring four runs and stealing three bases while going 3-for-5. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Keani Scurlock-Slade was a standout: she scored four runs and stole eight bases while going 2-for-4. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played. Alyzah Shuler was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing eight bases while going 2-for-5.
Southern Guilford's record now sits at 7-3. As for Ben L. Smith, their victory ended a 12-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-8.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Southern Guilford has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Ben L. Smith struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Southern Guilford's way against Ben L. Smith when the teams last played back in March, as Southern Guilford made off with a 15-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Storm since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
