Basketball Game Preview: Laguna Beach Breakers vs. University Trojans

The Laguna Beach Breakers will square off against the University Trojans at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both have had a bumpy ride up to this point with three consecutive losses for Laguna Beach and seven for University.

Last Monday, Laguna Beach was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 64-59 to Portola.

Despite the loss, Laguna Beach had strong showings from Ryan Cheng, who posted 23 points, and Brody Azadian, who had 19 points. That's the most points Cheng has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Damian Reider, who earned eight points.

Meanwhile, University came up short against St. Margaret's on Monday and fell 62-54.

Laguna Beach will have to contain Savion Ruth as he made an impact in University's last game. He scored 21 points and three steals. Ruth continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Connor Cao also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Even though they lost, University smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in five consecutive games.

University's defeat dropped their record down to 5-18. As for Laguna Beach, their loss dropped their record down to 9-18.

Laguna Beach came up short against University in their previous matchup back in January, falling 69-58. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of University's Isaac Evans, who went 10 of 20 en route to 26 points and seven steals.
