Baseball Recap: Hickory Grove Christian Comes Up Short

Hickory Grove Christian fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Concord Academy on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 4-3. The Lions' loss continues a trend for the squad, making it four in a row.

Brady Johnson was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out nine batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Nathan Dowdy made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs. Von Pelow also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Hickory Grove Christian's defeat dropped their record down to 9-12. As for Concord Academy, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-9.

Hickory Grove Christian and Concord Academy could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. The Lions will take on Legion Collegiate Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (150 vs. 17). Meanwhile, Concord Academy (ranked 349th) will meet Metrolina Christian Academy (ranked fourth) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
