Softball Recap: Anacortes Seahawks vs. Ferndale Golden Eagles

Anacortes was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They fell 21-17 to the Ferndale Golden Eagles. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Anacortes of the 8-7 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2023.

Jenna Baker led a balanced group of hitters, going 4-for-5 with three runs, two doubles, and a triple. Hayden Davies was another key contributor, scoring two runs while going 4-for-5.

Even though they lost, Anacortes was hitting in the alleys and finished the game with seven doubles. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ferndale only hit four.

On Ferndale's side, Mallory Butenschoen made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over eight innings while giving up seven earned (and ten unearned) runs off 16 hits (and only one walk). Butenschoen has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive pitching appearances. Butenschoen was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Kaelin Blakley and Kate Johnston did most of the damage at the plate: Blakley scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her six plate appearances, while Johnston scored five runs and stole four bases while getting on base in five of her six plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Maddy Slevin, who scored three runs while getting on base in three of her six plate appearances.

Anacortes' loss dropped their record down to 3-8. As for Ferndale, the win got them back to even at 7-7.

Anacortes will head out on the road to square off against Sehome at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Ferndale will take on Mount Vernon at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Ferndale will be hoping to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.
