Softball Game Preview: Millington Cardinals vs. Cass City Red Hawks

The Millington Cardinals will challenge the Cass City Red Hawks at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

It was a proper cat-fight when Millington took on Ubly on Monday. The Cardinals put the hurt on the Bearcats with a sharp 14-2 victory. Winning may never get old, but the Cardinals sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.

Ashlyn Bentoski made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one double. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.

In other batting news, Morgan Matusik and Lilly Damm did most of the damage at the plate: Matusik went 2-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while Damm got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That home run was Matusik's first of the season. Karlie Sherman was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Millington was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .438. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .304 or higher in four consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Cass City waltzed into their matchup on Monday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Everything went their way against Athens as they made off with a 16-7 win.

Millington pushed their record up to 5-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Cass City, their victory bumped their record up to 6-4.
