Baseball Recap: Avonworth Picks Up Tenth Straight Win at Home

Avonworth proved they can win big last Tuesday (they won by 11) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Hopewell Vikings 1-0. The win was nothing new for the Antelopes as they're now sitting on six straight.

The result came thanks to Patrick Bykowski's shutout, as he gave up just a hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Avonworth saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jack Dolan, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.

Avonworth hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters every time they've taken the field this season.

Avonworth pushed their record up to 6-1-1 with the victory, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for Hopewell, their loss dropped their record down to 1-6.

Looking ahead, Avonworth will venture away from home to challenge South Allegheny at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Antelopes 2, the Gladiators 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Hopewell, they will be playing at home against North Catholic at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Vikings' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Trojans have averaged an impressive 7.5 runs per game this season.
