Baseball Recap: Mayfield Comes Up Short

Mayfield had lost five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 0-6 to make it six. They came up short against the Canajoharie Cougars, falling 16-0. The Panthers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

As for Canajoharie, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.0 runs over those games.

For Canajoharie's part, Aiden Bowerman made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over five innings pitched. Bowerman was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.

In other batting news, Canajoharie got a big performance out of Cody Hyney, who went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and three runs. Hyney has become a key player for the Cougars: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 1-3 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Sullevan Stinson, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with three RBI and two runs.

While Mayfield had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
