Football Recap: Morro Bay Takes a Loss + How To Watch

After flying high against Santa Maria last Friday, Morro Bay came back down to earth. The Pirates took a 43-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Atascadero Greyhounds on Friday. The Pirates were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Greyhounds apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in November of 2024.

Despite the loss, Morro Bay still got an impressive performance from Sands Dougherty, who threw for 369 yards and four TDs while completing 75.6% of his passes, and also rushed for 80 yards and one touchdown. A healthy portion of Dougherty's aerial production (144 yards to be exact) went to Anthony Campanario, who also brought in two receiving touchdowns.

Damon Mitchell had another great game (as he tends to do), rushing for 358 yards and three scores while picking up 19.9 yards per carry, and also picking up 40 receiving yards for Atascadero. With that strong performance, Mitchell is now averaging an impressive 120.8 rushing yards per game. Another player making a difference was Mike Trejo, who rushed for 39 yards and three TDs.

Morro Bay has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-6 record this season. As for Atascadero, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 5-4.

Looking ahead, Morro Bay is taking a road trip to challenge Nipomo at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Titans will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each matchup than the last. As for Atascadero, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against San Luis Obispo at 7:00 p.m. That game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Mitchell and Colbin Garrison.
