Cardinal Newman took a 12-run loss the last time they faced off against Hammond, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cardinals skirted past the Skyhawks 5-3. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Cardinals as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Tori Peyton made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Peyton was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maria Leonelli, who scored a run while going 3-for-3. McKenna Miller was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Cardinal Newman always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hammond only posted an OBP of .375.

Cardinal Newman's win was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 2-3. As for Hammond, their defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 5-4.

Cardinal Newman does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Hammond, they will be playing in front of their home fans against First Baptist School at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Hurricanes have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.4 runs per game on average), something the Skyhawks will no doubt try to take advantage of.
