After a string of three wins, Willmar's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. 2025 welcomed they with a 93-68 loss courtesy of the Monticello Magic. While losing is never fun, the Cardinals can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Minnesota basketball rankings (they are ranked 248th, while the Magic are ranked 79th).

Jackson Soroko continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Monticello, going 8 of 15 on his way to 22 points in addition to eight boards and seven assists. Soroko's afternoon made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brayden Dollard, who went 6 for 10 from beyond the arc on his way to 24 points.

Willmar's defeat dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Monticello, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-3.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Willmar will take on Rocori at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Monticello, they will face off against Big Lake at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.
