Basketball Game Preview: West Springfield Spartans vs. Woodson Cavaliers

West Springfield is 1-9 against Woodson since February of 2020 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The West Springfield Spartans will square off against the Woodson Cavaliers at 7:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both will really light up the scoreboard.

On Tuesday, West Springfield lost to South County at home by a 72-55 margin. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 209th, while the Stallions are ranked 87th).

Meanwhile, Woodson waltzed into their matchup on Monday with 14 straight wins... but they left with 15. They walked away with a 64-54 victory over the Bruins. That's two games straight that the Cavaliers have won by exactly ten points.

Woodson's win came from a few key players West Springfield will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Noah Limbago, who went 6 for 10 en route to 18 points in addition to seven boards and six assists. That's the most assists he has posted since back in January of 2024. Kaylen Chilton was another key player, going 7 of 14 on his way to 21 points.

Woodson pushed their record up to 17-2 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 24.6 points. As for West Springfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-12.

West Springfield was dealt a bruising 73-45 loss at the hands of Woodson when the teams last played back in January. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point West Springfield was down 41-19.
